Skin Care Myth: Shaving vellus hair turns it terminal.

Facts:

False. Numerous studies dating back to the 1920s show that shaving will not make hair grow thicker, stronger, longer or faster. When a vellus hair is shaved with a razor, it grows back with a blunt edge. This can make the hair appear thicker and coarser – but it is not. Hormonal changes, genetics, some medical conditions, and certain medications are typically responsible for turning fine, pale vellus hairs (also known as “peach fuzz”) into coarser, pigmented terminal hairs. Once a hair has been transformed into a terminal hair, it is likely to stay that way.
